You take the good, you take the bad, you take them both and now you have Canadian-born, Oscar-winning writer-director Paul Haggis cutting ties with the Church of Scientology.
Haggis took the bold step — and by “bold,” we mean he wrote a letter he thought was private and it found its way onto a Scientology-bashing blog — of lambasting the Church of Scientology.
The notoriously secretive yet high-profile religion landed squarely in the spotlight this week as Haggis blasted one of its leaders, Tommy Davis, for not taking a stand against a San Diego branch that backed California’s Proposition 8, an anti-gay-rights measure that voters approved last year. He also claimed that Davis lied about the Church’s so-called “disconnection” policy, which calls for members to sever ties with friends or family members who denounce or hold an antagonistic position toward the Church.

Haggis was born in London, Ontario, Canada, and his writing credits include “The Facts of Life” and “Crash,” which won the Oscar for Best Picture in 2006.
