Canadian Thieves Like Civics, Escalades

Honda_Civic_coupe595Canadian car thieves like Hondas just as much as American car thieves do, but there’s also an interesting twist in the list of the most frequently stolen cars in Canada, which was released Tuesday by the Insurance Bureau of Canada.

The 2000 Honda Civic topped Canada’s list, while the U.S. list released a couple of months ago was led by the 1995 Honda Accord.

But that’s where the similarities end. While American thieves targeted pickup trucks and even the 1999 Ford Taurus, Canada’s list includes four models of the Cadillac Escalade, an Audi Quattro and a 2006 Hummer H2.

“We’re seeing two very different forms of auto theft,” Rick Dubin, Vice-President of investigations for the IBC, told Canwest News Service. “One type of thief is just looking for a car that’s easy to steal, with no approved anti-theft electronic immobilizer, which can be used for transportation, stripped for parts or used to commit other crimes.

“The other type of thief goes after newer, high-end vehicles. Although these are harder to steal, sophisticated organized crime rings can make a strong profit by shipping them overseas, chopping them for parts, or changing their vehicle identification numbers (VINs) and selling them to unsuspecting consumers.”
