Could Mark Messier and Wayne Gretzky make some hockey magic together again?
The one-time Edmonton Oilers teammates who won four Stanley Cup trophies in the 1980s could be reunited with the Canadian national team at the 2010 IIHF World Hockey Championship.
While they’re a little advanced in age to participate in the under-21 tournament, Messier has been named the team’s general manager and said he’d be interested in having Gretzky coach the team, according to The Canadian Press.
Asked Wednesday if Gretzky is being considered for the job, Messier replied: “Yeah … for sure.”
Gretzky hasn’t talked about whether he’s interested in coaching the team. He’s been away from hockey since he left the Phoenix Coyotes back in September.
The pair ruled the ’80s in Edmonton, leading the Oilers to four championships before Gretzky was traded to the Los Angeles Kings. They were teammates once more with the New York Rangers for a season in the twilight of each of their careers.
