For the sixth consecutive time, Canada failed to qualify for the world’s largest sporting event — a feat the national team hasn’t accomplished since the World Cup was in Mexico in 1986.
What’s worse is that it’s started to weigh on national pride. An Ipsos Reid survey released Wednesday says 64 percent of Canadians would be prouder of their homeland if its soccer team managed to qualify for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, according to a report in the Calgary Herald.
Not everyone surveyed put their national pride on the line, but 78 person of respondents said it’s “important” for the country to be represented in Brazil.
Even Canada’s immigrants said they’d wear their maple leafs proudly — and firstly — if the country qualified next time, with 83 percent of those describing themselves as “new Canadians” saying they’d root for Canada ahead of their native country.
