UPDATE: Just hours into the “Summer of Change Your Mind,” we’ve already got an update that could change the face of the entire campaign.
Canadian of the Week reader Kelly MacKinnon gave me the heads up (see below) that Bryan Adams tweeted back in March that he’d never been contacted by anyone from “Glee.” It’s true! At least it’s true that he tweeted it. Here’s what he said back on March 14: “Just to set the record straight, no one from Glee has ever approached me for songs on their TV show…”
So, why would “Glee” creator Ryan Murphy have said Adams rejected the show’s request? We’re going to get to the bottom of this.
Meanwhile, here’s the original “Summer of Change Your Mind” Day 1 post:
The news cut like a knife.
It should have been a joyous day last week when Billboard reported that Coldplay agreed to let their songs be used on “Glee” after having held out since the show premiered last May. Instead, it was anything but heaven when we at Canadian of the Week read what “Glee” creator and executive producer Ryan Murphy had to say about the only other outright rejection he received when looking for songs for the show.
“At the beginning,” Murphy said, “a lot of people didn’t know what we were and asked to see pages [in advance], but I refused because I didn’t want to set precedent of them having any involvement. My favorite rejection was Bryan Adams. Coldplay and Bryan Adams were really the only rejections. But Coldplay called a week ago and said, ‘We’re sorry, you can have our catalog.’”
That’s right. Kingston, Ontario’s own Bryan Guy Adams is the last to withhold his music from the kids at William McKinley High School, who have a show choir and they try real hard. They just lost to Vocal Adrenaline. Without your songs, they’ll never get far.
So, today marks Day 1 of what we’re calling the “Summer of Change Your Mind.”
We’re gonna run to you, Bryan, and make a request that’s straight from the heart: Change your mind and let the kids from “Glee” sing your songs.
Get on board! Comment below to let Bryan Adams know you want to hear the “Glee” sing his songs.
