Officials in Edmonton are saying the opening of outdoor ice rinks at city parks could be delayed until well into January if the record-breaking heat continues. Temperatures have been surprisingly high lately, including a record 17 degrees Celsius, which must be at least 100 degrees Fahrenheit, which could lead to one of the latest openings of city ice rinks in recent memory, according to a report from the CBC.

It takes six to eight weeks after the first freeze to prepare a safe skating surface, Sager said. So far, the freezing process has already begun with about three inches of ice on most ponds, and Sager is crossing his fingers that temperatures continue to dip and stay cold.

A parks spokesman told the CBC it takes six to eight weeks after the first freeze to prepare a safe skating surface. So far, the freezing process has already begun with about three inches of ice on most ponds, and Sager is crossing his fingers that temperatures continue to dip and stay cold.

The city aims to get ice rinks open by Christmas, and they’re starting to lose hope about that happening this year.
