Emmys: Lorne Rules; Lilly’s ‘Lost’

Canadian of the Week is not typically a website that talks about itself in the third person, but Canadian of the Week has mixed feelings about today’s Emmy nominations.

There were certainly some highlights, and a solid group of Canadians earned themselves well deserved nominations. But there were a couple of snubs that Canadian of the Week cannot let stand.

Saskatchewan’s Evangeline Lilly, after six seasons of snubbery from the Emmy voters, ended her run on “Lost” unrecognized one last time despite a fabulous turn in the show’s final season. Always a central figure in the “Lost” narrative, Lilly’s Kate was full of twists and turns in the last season, both back on the island and in the “alternate timeline” as she tried to do right by Claire while still running from the law.

Perhaps we’re thinking more with our heart here than with our critical eye for television, but the overlooking of Winnipeg’s Anna Paquin on “True Blood” can’t be overlooked. The show was nominated for Best Drama, overcoming Emmy’s general distaste for vampires, but bubkis for Paquin and co-star Stephen Moyer. (Don’t worry, Anna. Once we get around to finishing our Top 10 Canadians of the TV season, you’ll be pleased).

Now to the good news.

The best story to come out of this year’s nominations, as far as COTW is concerned, is the record set by “Saturday Night Live.” The brainchild of Torontoan Lorne Michaels hauled in 13 nominations, giving it 126 over its 35-year history and making it the most nominated show in Emmy history, surpassing “ER.”

“We’ve been on a long time, and the nice part about being on a long time is you are going to break some records,” Michaels told The New York Times. When the reporter told him he didn’t have to be modest, Michaels said, “Well, it’s the Canadian part of me.”

That’s why we’re here, Lorne.

More Canadians were earned Emmy nods were:

  • Martin Short for his eye-catching dramatic role on “Damages”
  • Catherine O’Hara for her role in HBO’s “Temple Gradin”
  • Director Jeremy Podeswa, who co-directed the eighth installment of “The Pacific”
  • Funnyman Dave Foley, who landed a voiceover nomination for his role in Disney’s “Prep & Landing.”
  • Choreographer Stacey Tookey, whose routine, “Fear,” on “So You Think You Can Dance,” was danced by Kathryn and Legacy to Patti LaBelle’s “2 Steps Away.” (Editor’s note: Canadian of the Week will always have a soft spot for Stacey Tookey, who was the first star to give us an interview).
  • Finally, we’ll give Calgary’s Cory Monteith some love for his contribution to “Glee’s” astounding 19 Emmy nominations, including one for Best Comedy and another for Outstanding Casting for a Comedy

Summer of Change Your Mind: Day 3

Editor’s note: Canadian of the Week has taken on the task of joining two massive and seemingly destined musical forces: “Glee” and Bryan Adams. The Kingston, Ont., native reportedly is the last major holdout among pop artists who have been asked to make their music available to the show. Can we make it happen? You can’t tell us it’s not worth fighting for. We can’t help it — there’s nothing we want more. Thus, this is the “Summer of Change Your Mind.”

It’s Day 3 of the “Summer of Change Your Mind” and it might be time to consider a new campaign name.

As we told you almost immediately after the first “Summer of Change Your Mind” post was published, Bryan Adams tweeted back in March that he’d never been contacted by the show.

And last night, Bryan took to Twitter again, and it appears we’ve ignited an all-out Twitter battle. Here is what Bryan posted last night:

“Message to Ryan Murphy / Glee: Please stop telling the press I rejected your show, when we’ve NEVER spoken. Be polite and pick up the phone.”

There you have it. The Twitter feud rages in true Canadian style, with a plea for politeness and an invitation to chat via telephone.

For starters, Canadian of the Week is going to choose to believe last night’s tweet was in response to the “Summer of Change Your Mind” campaign for two reasons.

1. Because Ryan Murphy’s quote about Bryan Adams’ alleged rejection came out last night and we’re pretty much the only site still talking about it, including a tweet from our @canadiansrule account Wednesday afternoon that mentioned @BryanAdams.

2. Because it makes us feel good.

So, it appears this could all just be a big misunderstanding. Adams clearly feels like “Glee” creator Ryan Murphy has been a bit reckless in his comments to the media. Let’s hope this hasn’t triggered any bad blood, because if there’s one thing we can all agree on it’s that we’d love to see Bryan’s songs performed by the “Glee” kids, and that’s what this is really all about.

Because, Bryan, the only thing that looks good on ‘Glee’ is you.

Could this be a moment to stop and consider a new name for the “Summer of Change Your Mind”? Perhaps not. It wouldn’t bode well, and we can’t stop this thing we started. But one possibility could be the “Summer of Who’s Been Lyin’?”

For our part, Canadian of the Week is leaning toward Team Bryan on this one, but we can’t think of a reason why Ryan Murphy would have pulled Bryan’s name out of the clear blue sky if there had never been an attempt to connect in the first place. Of course, this could be a case of someone’s “people” talked to someone else’s “people” and the message never got all the way to Bryan, himself.

We’re still trying to figure this thing out. Another update tomorrow…

Summer of Change Your Mind: Day 2

Editor’s note: Canadian of the Week has taken on the task of joining two massive and seemingly destined musical forces: “Glee” and Bryan Adams. The Kingston, Ont., native reportedly is the last major holdout among pop artists who have been asked to make their music available to the show. Can we make it happen? You can’t tell us it’s not worth fighting for. We can’t help it — there’s nothing we want more. Thus, this is the “Summer of Change Your Mind.”

As you may have read yesterday, there was an immediate update on the “Summer of Change Your Mind” campaign when an astute reader pointed out that Bryan Adams tweeted back in March that no one from “Glee” has ever approached him for songs on the show.

The direct quote: “Just to set the record straight, no one from Glee has ever approached me for songs on their TV show…”

Needless to say — but I’ll say it anyway — this could change the scope of the entire effort. We need facts, and then we need for this union to be consummated. (OK, saying it like that sounds a little gross, but you get the point).

Canadian of the Week’s investigative team is on the case. We’ve reached out to Fox representatives for comment and are waiting to hear back. COTW will continue to pound the virtual pavement to get to the bottom of this they-sang-he-said situation.

In the meantime, which of Adams’ songs would you like to see done on the show, and who would sing them? Comment below!

Summer of Change Your Mind: Get Bryan Adams on ‘Glee’

UPDATE: Just hours into the “Summer of Change Your Mind,” we’ve already got an update that could change the face of the entire campaign.

Canadian of the Week reader Kelly MacKinnon gave me the heads up (see below) that Bryan Adams tweeted back in March that he’d never been contacted by anyone from “Glee.” It’s true! At least it’s true that he tweeted it. Here’s what he said back on March 14: “Just to set the record straight, no one from Glee has ever approached me for songs on their TV show…”

So, why would “Glee” creator Ryan Murphy have said Adams rejected the show’s request? We’re going to get to the bottom of this.

Meanwhile, here’s the original “Summer of Change Your Mind” Day 1 post:

The news cut like a knife.

It should have been a joyous day last week when Billboard reported that Coldplay agreed to let their songs be used on “Glee” after having held out since the show premiered last May. Instead, it was anything but heaven when we at Canadian of the Week read what “Glee” creator and executive producer Ryan Murphy had to say about the only other outright rejection he received when looking for songs for the show.

“At the beginning,” Murphy said, “a lot of people didn’t know what we were and asked to see pages [in advance], but I refused because I didn’t want to set precedent of them having any involvement. My favorite rejection was Bryan Adams. Coldplay and Bryan Adams were really the only rejections. But Coldplay called a week ago and said, ‘We’re sorry, you can have our catalog.’”

That’s right. Kingston, Ontario’s own Bryan Guy Adams is the last to withhold his music from the kids at William McKinley High School, who have a show choir and they try real hard. They just lost to Vocal Adrenaline. Without your songs, they’ll never get far.

So, today marks Day 1 of what we’re calling the “Summer of Change Your Mind.”

We’re gonna run to you, Bryan, and make a request that’s straight from the heart: Change your mind and let the kids from “Glee” sing your songs.

Get on board! Comment below to let Bryan Adams know you want to hear the “Glee” sing his songs.

Not All Canadians Know Each Other?

Photos: The CW and Fox

News flash: Not all Canadians know each other.

E! Online’s Hollywood Party girl was shocked — shocked! — to discover recently that not all Canadians know each other.

“90210″ star Shenae Grimes (of Toronto) was asked if she ever bonds with her fellow countryman, “Glee” star Cory Monteith, who hails from Calgary (as any good COTW reader already knows).

“God, I wish I knew who that was,” Shenae replied, also noting she hasn’t gotten a chance to see “Glee,” which airs on Fox (her “90210″ airs on The CW).

In fairness, I’ve been surprised at just how many Canadians really do know each other. At the same time, Calgary and Toronto are more than 2,000 miles apart.

The Party Girl’s post ends with a simple suggestion that the two rising TV stars meet because they might make a nice Canadian couple.

And that’s an argument we can get behind.

Olivia Newton-John Gets Physical on Ice?

Olivia_Newton-John595While she’s no stranger to getting physical, we can’t help but wonder what Australian pop star and actress Olivia Newton-John knows about hockey.

Nonetheless, she’s starring in a new Canadian musical film that will begun production next week in Toronto, according a story in the National Post.

“Score: A Hockey Musical,” has every indication of being a sort of reverse “Billy Elliott.” Newton-John is set to play a hippie-intellectual mom who homeschools her son (newcomer Noah Reid), feeds him organic food, takes him to the art gallery and becomes dismayed when he reveals a love for hockey, and turns out to be exceedingly good at it, the National Post reports.

The world of movie musicals is obviously nothing new to Newton-John, who has “Grease” and “Xanadu” to her credit. She’ll also be appearing with Calgary’s Cory Monteith on “Glee” in the spring,

The movie is set to come out in Canada in October.

Another awards show, another chance to congratulate Calgary’s Cory Monteith, star of Fox’s “Glee,” and his castmates on taking home the best comedy series cast honors at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Saturday night.

This honor is particularly special as it is voted on by other actors and it demonstrates the recognition of the fine work that Monteith and Co. are doing on their fresh, young show.

Canadians Bring Home Gold … at Globes

GlobesCanadians came up big at Sunday night’s Golden Globe Awards, with director James Cameron taking home the top prizes as he won for Best Director and his film, “Avatar,” claimed the trophy for Best Motion Picture, Drama.

The Kapuskasing, Ontario, native who’s long lived in Los Angeles has had a heck of a year with the release of his long-awaited and highly anticipated adventure film to the far-off planet of Pandora. The film was Cameron’s first since a little thing called “Titanic” was released 12 years ago, and it seems the wait didn’t hamper the new film’s performance. In addition to claiming some major awards, it’s approaching $500 million gross revenue at the box office, according to boxofficemojo.com, putting it third place all time after “Titanic” ($600 million) and “The Dark Knight” ($533 million).

Elsewhere, screenwriter and director Jason Reitman took home a Best Screenplay award with co-writer Sheldon Turner for “Up in the Air,” which starred George Clooney. Reitman, of Montreal, also directed the film, but lost in that category to the aforementioned Cameron.

FInally, Calgary’s Cory Monteith was not nominated for an individual acting award, but his show “Glee” won the top prize for Best TV Series, Musical or Comedy, knocking off heavy hitters such as “30 Rock,” “The Office” and “Entourage,” and another highly touted newcomer, “Modern Family.”
