America’s favorite “Idol” — OK, at least one of its two favorites — is moving to Canada.
Carrie Underwood is making the expected move north after marrying her beau Mike Fisher of the Ottawa Senators. According to Us Magazine, Mike and Carrie are building a dream home in Canada and a source tells them it should be done next month.
That’s all fine and good, but the last bit of the report was what struck me. Carrie officially changed her last name to Fisher after the wedding. Now, just stop for a moment and wonder whether you know any famous Carrie Fishers.
It looks like America’s sweetheart could be moving north.
Carrie Underwood’s new hubby Mike Fisher told reporters this week that Ottawa seems like a fine place to settle down.
“I love it here in Ottawa. She likes it, she knows how much I like it and I want to stay here my whole career if possible,” he said, according to CTV. “And it won’t be just up to me, it will be up to the team too after my contract is up.
“We’re both comfortable here. Home is where we are, so let’s make this home.”
Fisher went on to talk at length about their wedding, honeymoon and what his new life in the paparazzi’s spotlight has been like.
Country star and “American Idol” winner Carrie Underwood dropped just a touch of info about her upcoming wedding with Ottawa Senator Mike Fisher, giving a country radio station some scoop on the couple’s non-traditional approach to the wedding cake.
Check out the video below to find out what it’s all about:
“30 Rock” might be looking for join “How I Met Your Mother” when it comes to cracking Canadian jokes.
Tina Fey & Co. introduced a new character, a Canadian actor named Danny who’s overly polite, doesn’t understand sarcasm and, as we saw on Thursday night, is nominated for a Juno (along with “Sir David Coulier”) for having penned the psych-up song that’s played at Ottawa Senators games.
Check out the clip below to get in on the fun. (Apologies for all the ads, but at least it’s a legal version):
Conversative speaker and writer Ann Coulter canceled an appearance at the University of Ottawa because her security team decided that some protesters outside made it unsafe.
She responded by insulting the students and the vice president of the university, according to a report in the Calgary Herald.
“The University of Ottawa is really easy to get into, isn’t it?” she said in an interview after the cancelled event. “I never get any trouble at the Ivy League schools. It’s always the bush league schools.”
Coulter was already upset that Vice President and Provost Francois Houle had sent her a letter telling her that freedom of speech in Canada is defined differently in Canada than in the U.S. and that she should be careful not to step over the line.
“I’m pretty sure little Francois A-Houle does not need to travel with a bodyguard,” she said. “I would like to know when this sort of violence, this sort of protest, has been inflicted upon a Muslim — who appear to be, from what I’ve read of the human rights complaints, the only protected group in Canada. I think I’ll give my speech tomorrow night in a burka. That will protect me.”
Whether or not his new movie, “She’s Out of My League,” is any good, this week’s Canadian of the Week honors go to Jay Baruchel.
The Ottawa native who grew up in Canada gets the chance to head up his own comedy after a few rounds of playing in the supporting cast in recent hits like “Knocked Up,” “Tropic Thunder” and “Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist.” He starred in the short-lived Judd Apatow TV comedy “Undeclared.”
Baruchel is a proud Canadian who has a tattoo of a red maple leaf on his chest. It was featured in “Knocked Up,” in which he played the friend of a Vancouver native who was living in the U.S. illegally.
The trailer (below) for “She’s Out of My League” looks like it follows the general recent rom-com trend. It has the look and feel of an Apatow film, but Apatow is nowhere to be found in the credits.
In the movie, Baruchel plays a shlubby airport security guy who finds a beautiful girl’s cell phone and she goes out with him to thank him. His friends can’t believe it and comedy ensues.
I’m reserving judgment until hearing more and seeing what the buzz is like, but it sounds like a fun weekend comedy.
If ever there was a true honorary Canadian, it’s Brendan Fraser. He was born in the United States, but his parents were both Canadian and he holds the distinction of being the first American-born actor to get the honor of induction to Canada’s Walk of Fame.
Fraser took a moment — really, just a moment — to open up about his Canadian side to Sara Castillo, Comcast.net’s movie editor. She asked him about his “Canadian alter-ego and here’s what he had to tell us:
“I’m half-Canadian,” he said. “The lower half. That’s why I’m such an amazing dancer.”
You might have heard Fraser has a new movie out today, co-starring with Harrison Ford in the based-on-a-true-story docudrama, “Extraordinary Measures.” (Click here to see Sara’s full interview with Fraser, where he talks about working with Ford and taking such an emotional story and trying to keep it from becoming melodramatic.)
The “American Idol” and the Canadian hockey star are getting married.
Carrie Underwood’s spokeswoman and her hockey beau himself confirmed the engagement after about a year of dating.
“I’m happy to confirm that Carrie Underwood is engaged to Mike Fisher, and the couple couldn’t be happier,” Underwood’s rep told Us magazine. “No wedding date has been set at this time.”
Mike Fisher, a center for the Ottawa Senators, confirmed it himself for the Ottawa Sun, saying, “It’s true. We’re both obviously excited and very happy. I’m not sure exactly when (the wedding will take place).”
Fisher’s friends and teammates were happy for him, and giving him a hard time almost immediately.
“It’s great. It’s a long time coming. There’s going to be a lot of broken hearts here in Ottawa with all those girls that are in love with Mikey,” Senators winger Chris Neil told the Sun. “He’s met an awesome girl. We’re ecstatic for him.”
Underwood, was erroneously reported to have been moving in with Fisher earlier this year, tells Self magazine in next month’s issue that she’d love to have a small family.
“Not that I have a husband to have one with yet, but someday I’d like a family — not a big one, but not a small one either,” she told the magazine. “Two kids is good, three is fine. Four? Somebody’s getting something done, because we ain’t having five!”
This could be the best U.S.-Canadian pairing since Will Arnett and Amy Poehler!

What a huge step for international relations: “American Idol” winner and country’s sweetheart Carrie Underwood is rumored to be moving in with her Canadian hockey player boyfriend Mike Fisher.
The couple has been dating for more than a year and Carrie took the step of publicly acknowledging her love of the Senators center in the liner notes, where she wrote, ”Thank you #12. You are the most amazing addition to my life! You are such a wonderful person and have had such an amazing hand in the building of this album and in the growth of me as a person. I love you so much! You make my life better in every way! I thank God for you every day.”
Now, an unnamed source tells OK! magazine that Fisher “asked her to move in, and she said yes… She’s on the road a lot and can’t commit fully, but she did clear out space in his closet and stock his kitchen with her favorites.”
The source also says there’s been talk of marriage.
Carrie has tested the pro athlete waters before, having been linking to Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo back in 2007. She had mostly gone on record as saying they were friends, but Romo confirmed on his Web site that they were dating.
Last week, Carrie acknowledged her relationship with Fisher on “Live with Regis & Kelly,” but didn’t seem to want to go into much detail. She did say she’s learning the rules of hockey and that she gets nervous when players she knows are involved in fights on the ice.
