Halifax native Sarah McLachlan turns 42 today, and what better way to celebrate than to showcase our five favorite videos from her nearly two-decade career?

Well, we’ll say these are our four favorites of all time, and her new theme for the 2010 Winter Olympics, “One Dream,” which is growing on us in that epic, sports-montage-of-dreams-coming-true kind of way.

This is going to be a big year for our favorite mystery builder, starting with the aforementioned Olympics theme and continuing with a Lilith Fair revival that will feature some old favorites and new acts this summer.http://canadianoftheweek.com/tag/lilith-fair/

Lilith Fair 2010 Acts Announced

LilithActsSarah McLachlan today announced the first batch of confirmed acts for the 2010 Lilith Fair tour, and among the names are some familiar faces to fans of the original incarnation of the event.

Sheryl Crow, Emmylou Harris, Indigo Girls, Tegan and Sara, Erykah Badu, and McLachlan, of course, are among those who were involved with the tour in the late 1990s and who will be back on stage next year, according to a press release from the tour.

“Magic happens when you bring this many artistic women together,” said Badu, who performed on the main stage in 1998. “I’ll never forget the frequency and energy that I felt that first time I performed at Lilith. Between the sistas on stage and those in the audience, it was powerful!”

Some of the other big names for the 2010 tour include Brandi Carlile, Colbie Caillat, Corinne Bailey Rae, Jill Scott, Mary J. Blige, Miranda Lambert, Sarah Bareilles and Sugarland.

“I was beyond thrilled to hear of Lilith’s return. I was never lucky enough to get to see one of the shows in the original incarnation, but I have been waiting for this for a long time,” Bareilles said. “I love the philosophy behind this concert series, both celebrating women in music and also how music can help benefit the communities around them. I almost can’t believe that I actually get a chance to be a part of this! Lilith 2010 here we come.”

Canadian of the Week: Sarah Mac, Lilith Fair Are Back

Sarah_McLachlan2-595After an 11-year absence, Lilith Fair is back — and we can thank Halifax, Nova Scotia’s own Sarah McLachlan.

We mentioned “Sarah’s” appearance on “Saturday Night Live” earlier this week — and she’s such a good sport she Tweeted a link to the video that pokes some fun at Sarah’s ASPCA commercials — but she earns slightly belated Canadian of the Week honors from bringing back girl power with Lilith Fair 2010, and for kicking off a contest for local female singers across the United States to get a chance to perform on the tour.

The announcement of Lilith Fair 2010 was made on Oct. 27, but none of the acts were announced at the time, and we’re still waiting for word on who will join Sarah on stage this time around. The tour, which, the story goes, McLachlan started after being frustrated by concert promoters and radio stations that were unwilling to play two female acts back to back. She took that motivation and booked a tour with Paula Cole. The next year, Lilith Fair was born and in its three years it drew more than 1.5 million fans and raised more than $10 million for women’s charities.

The tour’s three years included artists such as Sheryl Crow, Erykah Bady, The Dixie Chicks, Missy Elliot, The Pretenders, Nelly Furtado, Jewel, Queen Latifah, Indigo Girls and McLachlan, the only artist to play every date of every year.

What do you think about Lilith Fair’s return? Which new female acts would you like to see included? Comment below!

Did You See This, Eh?: ‘SNL’ Mocks Sarah

SarahMcLachlan595With all the fanfare about Taylor Swift, Kanye West and “Twilight,” it was easy to miss a bit of Canadian representation during the recent episode of “Saturday Night Live.” But “SNL” had a bit of fun with Halifax, Nova Scotia’s own Sarah McLachlan, who “visited” the Weekend Update news segment to talk about the return of Lilith Fair but her agenda quickly turned into a chance to make a little light of her famously heart-wrenching ASPCA ads.
